About the magazine

The Offing is an online literary magazine founded in 2015 as a project of the Los Angeles Review of Books. It was established to provide a dedicated space for writing that exists at the margins of mainstream literary culture, with a particular emphasis on work by writers of color, queer and trans writers, and others whose voices have been historically underrepresented in traditional publishing. The magazine publishes poetry, fiction, nonfiction, and criticism, and has gained recognition for its rigorous editorial standards and its commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive literary community. Its ethos is one of thoughtful engagement with contemporary social and political issues, without sacrificing aesthetic complexity or literary craft.

Writers should familiarize themselves with the magazine's aesthetic and political commitments before submitting. The Offing prioritizes work that demonstrates a strong command of language and a willingness to engage with complex ideas, particularly around identity, power, and justice. Submissions should be polished and follow the guidelines provided on the website, including specific word limits and genre categories. Simultaneous submissions are generally accepted, but writers should notify the editors promptly if their work is accepted elsewhere. Response times can vary, so patience is advised. The magazine does not charge submission fees for most categories, reflecting its commitment to accessibility.
