Formed in 2018 with the mission to promote artists from Africa and the diaspora, AFIKARIS settled down in December 2020 in le Marais in Paris. It moved during summer 2022 in a larger location on Rue Notre Dame de Nazareth. The gallery showcases works by artists from Africa and the diaspora by aiming to provide their works with international visibility through participating in exhibitions, art fairs and collaborations with cultural institutions. AFIKARIS provides voices for its artists on topical issues as well as subjects at the heart of their art. It is also a space for reflection on the African contemporary art scene, including both emerging and established talents. The AFIKARIS Residency is a place dedicated to creation, at the disposal of the artists working with the gallery or who wish to develop a project for a future presentation with the gallery. It consists of a 120m2 studio and living space. The residency is not open to the public but it will be possible to visit it several times a year, either for private visits or during open studio days. This AiR programme has been designed to support and celebrate the achievements of artists from Africa who are provocative, innovative and highly engaged, both with social issues and their art forms. AIR partners with existing artist in residency programmes around the globe to award exceptional African artists with the opportunity to take up a short-term residency to focus on consolidating their work and developing new projects. Each residency partner selects one artist from a shortlist provided by the Africa Centre, following a continent-wide call for submissions. The costs of the residency and a round-trip airfare are included in each award. The residencies are available to all forms of artistic expression and types of artists, but each residency differs in terms of duration, structure and requirements. Since its inception in 2011, AIR has funded many African artists to attend residencies in Australia, Brazil, Ethiopia, Finland, Italy, Korea, the Netherlands, South Africa, Spain, Turkey, and the USA.

The AIR Celeia programme has been up and running since 2005. The programme encourages the development and promotion of the contemporary artistic and curatorial practices and is based on open dialogue, exchange and cooperation. It is conceived as a two-month residency for international artists and curators. The residency comes with a fee to the artist, space and time, as well as other structural conditions for artists to take on in-depth research, to develop and implement projects, on their own or in a group. It acquaints and connects its residents with local artistic goings-on, as well as those further afield. AIR Celeia residents have the opportunity to present their work in an exhibition venue run by the Centre for Contemporary Arts, which can take the form of a lecture, discussion, performance or exhibition. Selections are based on open calls and invitations.
Open Call for the 2026 Round. Unfolding the Place. Placing the Folds Stage 1 Introduction from AIR InSILo This year, we have decided to introduce two innovations in our approach to the open call. Firstly, we have chosen to structure the call in two stages. The first stage will be open until February 23. At this stage, we do not require a substantial amount of work from applicants. We request that you carefully read the open call concept and the curatorial text, watch a video featuring our co-curator, who designed the call, and write a short motivation letter. In this letter, you should describe the relationship between your practice and the concept of the call, as well as your motivation and the relevance of taking part in the residency. Please also send us your portfolio. Secondly, we are proposing a small experiment: the possibility of applying anonymously. Even though we, as a residency, declare ourselves a solidarity project, we nonetheless respect the right to anonymity as a tool against bias, and are keen to receive feedback on this option. We are interested in learning how many applicants would prefer this form of interaction. We would also kindly ask you to share your thoughts on what kind of anonymity you would like to see in open calls in general. This idea was inspired by the practice of blind auditions in music, which we are attempting to rethink and adapt for a residency open call. Stage 2 Applications selected in Stage 1 will receive an invitation to participate in Stage 2. Selected artists will have three weeks to submit the required materials. Unfolding the Place. Placing the Folds Curated by Agata Ciastoń For this edition, AIR InSILo invites artists to take part in a residency curated by Agata Ciastoń. The residency will focus on working with place as a field of relations, encompassing matter and memory, body and landscape, and local and cosmic time. The concept develops from the curator’s ongoing engagement with archives, territories, and landscapes, and proposes an approach that connects artistic practice with methods of critical observation and spatial analysis. Applicants are kindly asked to read the full curatorial text, Unfolding the Place. Placing the Folds. The residency is conceived as a space for developing or refining ideas rather than producing final works. It builds on research conducted by Ciastoń in Hollabrunn, where she tested various strategies for working with localities and spatial relations. Artists are invited to continue and expand this inquiry, whether by engaging directly with the environment of Hollabrunn or by connecting it to other geographic or conceptual territories. The aim is to examine how different sites, histories, and material traces intersect and inform artistic practice. The residency will take place in collaboration with Agata Ciastoń, who will accompany participants in the development of their projects through discussion and dialogue. The focus will be on the process itself, including mapping, recontextualising, and unfolding relationships between ground, archive, and imagination. This call is addressed to artists whose practices engage with site-specific, process-based, or research-oriented approaches; who examine relationships between landscape, infrastructure, memory, and history; who explore archives, walking, or mapping as artistic strategies; who reflect on the entanglement of human and material histories; and who seek to develop new approaches to spatial, historical, or ecological narratives.

The Artist In Residence Programme AIR Wro is a legacy programme of the European Capital of Culture Wrocław 2016. Its main purpose is to support and promote activities of individuals representing various fields of art and culture or active in border areas between them, interested in cooperating with representatives of local communities and environments as well as eager to build international cultural relations. In 2017 AIR Wro dedicates its projects to contemporary culture and urban identity – the urbanity defined as a set of characteristics, issues and tasks related to particular city, but also a city conceived as common space – jointly stated, produced and built. Common for specific group of inhabitants, but also for inhabitants of different cities concerning specific topics and phenomena. The concept of city is intended to form the starting point for activities related to research and analysis of modern cities, diagnosis and reflection on their condition and the level of public and civic awareness of their inhabitants, their involvement and participation in urban projects and initiatives, a sense of co-responsibility for a shared space – understood as public sphere and, at the same time, community of inhabitants. AIR Wro invites for residencies, among others, artists, curators, researchers, journalists, activists and animators interested in artistic, cultural and social projects, which are inspired by urban and grassroots movements or urban activism, are dedicated to current urban issues and problems, for instance public space, urban greenery, environmental protection and ecology, are related to civic and cultural education, social issues and cultural policy, and which serve the idea of mediation and searching for good practices and solutions for modern cities.
The AIR_Frankfurt program was founded by the City of Frankfurt’s Department for Culture in 1990 with the goal to foster the exchange between culturally interested and active cities. Since then more than 100 visual artists from Frankfurt were able to profit from the exchange program, with an equal number of artists from abroad coming to Frankfurt as part of the residency program. Since 2016 AIR_Frankfurt has been supervised by the production and exhibition platform basis e.V., while continuing to be supported by the City of Frankfurt’s Department for Culture.

AllArtNow is considered to be the first independent collective space in Syria for visual arts, multimedia and contemporary arts. Founded in 2005, the initiative aims to create greater opportunities for emerging Syrian artists and the development of the contemporary arts practice in Syria. The initial focus of the organisation was to establish virtual links with the international art world by Internet. Through the tenacity of AllArtNow’s founder and curator Abir Boukhari, this resulted in numerous exhibitions, training and workshops for Syrian artists abroad. In the last two years, AllArtNow’s work has expanded from virtual exchanges to physical interactions with local artists and audiences. A neglected house in the old city of Damascus now serves as AllArtNow’s laboratory for art. It is a hub for emerging artistic practice and serves as a meeting point for local and international artists to exchange ideas and form collaborations. Since July 2012, allartnow closed its door in Syria to open it to Syrian refugee families and starts to work in different places in the world as a nomdic space. Click here to read an article about allartnow in 2014, "Tomorrow will be the beginning of a new life". If you would like to follow their updated events, please check their Facebook page.
