BARTR is an annual interdisciplinary residency run by an independent collective in Budapest. It is an urban based, open plan program that focuses on underground artistic and cultural movements significant to Hungary and the Central European Area. Each session is 11 weeks long and hosts 10–15 residents at one time. The program is characterized by an open, decentralized structure. Studios are located in different spaces through the central districts of the city, the exhibition takes place in more than one venue, and collaboration with other artists, studios, and civil organisations is encouraged and facilitated, for those residents who are interested. In addition to residents’ self-directed work, a program of workshops aims to encourage collaboration, extend artistic practice and work towards a series of pieces to be exhibited during the final show. The workshops are focussed on two movements central to underground cultural expression: print / zine culture, and experimental and DIY audio and sound. Covid-19 update: At this stage, the organisers expect to hold the next session sometime in 2022 after a brief hiatus. However, they are waiting to see how travel restrictions and other international events related to COVID19 play out before fixing a date. A soon as it’s possible, they will be back and will accept 10-15 residents.

Hereby highlighting the focus and importance on the role of CCIs, Hybrid spaces and third spaces. C. Digital & Media Production. Using media—from film and sound to code and podcasting—as tools for critical reflection, experimentation, and inclusive storytelling. D. Culinary Residency. Positioning food as a medium for cultural exchange, ecological understanding, and artistic investigation. E. Environmental Research / Wirtschaft & Forschung. Bee Time artist residency explores the intersection of art and ecology. Their programs focus on researching the interrelationships between beekeeper, bee and landscape in a particular region, thus studying the influences of local culture and agriculture practices on the honeybee and vice versa. They introduce participants to concepts of bee centred beekeeping, and applied systems thinking. Working out of the understanding of the honeybee colony as a super-organism – a being with many individual bees comprising a unified consciousness, participants have the opportunity to practice self-organising social models inspired by hive consciousness by working together in a non hierarchical way.

Bidston Observatory Artistic Research Centre is a not-for-profit study site that focuses on providing individual users and groups with a low cost, temporary place to dictate their own methods of work. The centre allows practitioners to come and stay together, to develop projects that require time and space in a flexible, non-pressured environment. This is a site for research and experimentation, primarily directed towards cultural production and supporting the development of communities. The Observatory does not look to lay claim to work produced here, and the space is not for public presentation per se. Work here is mainly co-initiated rather than steered by traditional modes of curation. Practitioners define their own projects during their stay. The Observatory also hosts seminars, events and workshops and is open to a range of academic and non-academic discourses; from politics and social sciences to philosophy, bodywork, collective choreography or chat; where discussion can flow from kitchen to sound recording studio, and ideas can bounce between the domes and basements. The Observatory welcomes a diversity of fields and is a forum where different types of knowledge can be tested, shared and extended. At its core, Bidston Observatory Artistic Research Centre is an independent project which supports other projects. It is an experiment in process.
