The unique residence is an old, lately restored villa, originally built in 1889. It is located in a pittoresque Eläintarhanlahti Bay area together with eight other wooden villas nearby. The villa is surrounded by a little park in the waterfront. It is situated near city center with public transportation nearby, but still having its tranquil athmosphere. The villa offers for its guests a pleasant home away from home. The residence Villa Eläintarha is part of the City of Helsinki Culture Office, being one of the ten operative units of the Culture office. It promotes and supports culture by offering unique and low cost living facilities for artists working in Helsinki.

The house was previously the home of the famous Danish writer, Elsa Gress and her husband, the American painter, Clifford Wright. Here they created the artists colony 'Decenter' for artists and intellectuals, which became a milestone in Danish art and culture history during the 70's and 80's. Today the house is a residence for writers and other creative people, who need to concentrate on a project. Individuals and small groups (4 persons) are welcome at Villa Gress. The guests are a.o. writers, journalists, scientists, designers, scriptwriters, photographers, painters etc. There is no outcome mandatory and no fixed schedule.

Villa R is a new private residency for artists. It is the first international point of reference for contemporary art in the city of Messina, Sicily. It was designed in 1990 by the two owners, Iolanda Vacalebre and Nicola Rustica, who used the villa for artistic and musical productions for many years. Since April 2013, the owners decided to offer most of the spaces of the villa for intercultural and interdisciplinary exchange with professionals (both foreign and Italian). These activities aim especially to the creation of new projects and artworks in a stimulating environment, in contact with other artists and with nature. The residence has wide space for artistic production of any size and media.
The Villa facilitates slow living and serenity, thus space and inspiration to let artistic processes unfold and concise contemplation take place. A space with fertile ground for discourses, about vita contemplativa and activa, a space for temporary communities, a space for interventions and revitalisation. The residents of the Villa mainly live in autonomy and by themselves. The facilities are taken care of by the current group of residents and with the according solicitude. Mindfulness and awareness are constant co-beings and from time to time, the pears need to be harvested from the tree. The residency is in constant transformation, a place in progress, a place of encounters and constant collaboration. Their interest does not lay in what you already have achieved, but in what you want to remain unsure of.
