About the magazine

Cherry Tree is the literary journal of Washington College, founded in 2011 under the auspices of the Rose O'Neill Literary House. It publishes poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction annually, with a deliberate emphasis on work that demonstrates formal awareness and emotional precision. The journal's founding ethos is rooted in the college's literary tradition—home to the Sophie Kerr Prize, the nation's largest undergraduate literary award—and seeks to foster a community of writers who value craft over trend. Each issue is curated by student editors under faculty guidance, ensuring a fresh yet rigorous editorial perspective.

Submitting your work

Reading periodVaries

Cherry Tree accepts submissions via Submittable during its annual reading period, typically from September through November for the following spring issue. Simultaneous submissions are permitted with prompt notification of acceptance elsewhere. Writers should submit no more than five poems or one prose piece (up to 5,000 words). The editors appreciate work that balances innovation with accessibility, and they encourage writers to familiarize themselves with past issues before submitting. Payment is in copies, with a modest honorarium for contributors.
