Mexico
Maracuyá is an international artist residency in Tijuana, Mexico, founded by artist, educator, and Tijuana native Dmitri Zurita. Housed on a beachfront property two kilometers south of the US-Mexico border wall at the northwesternmost edge of Latin America, the program has convened an invited cohort of established international artists each summer since 2018. Residents arrive without production requirements, exhibition mandates, curatorial briefs, or cost of attendance; asked only to be present with the place, the city, and each other. Against the residency’s prevailing logic of output and exchange, Maracuyá holds open a different proposition: that place, proximity, and unstructured time constitute a serious form of practice. Curatorial support, professional development advice and other residency resources will be available as needed, as well as social networking and exhibition opportunities with local groups.

Matadero Madrid is a living, changing space catering for creative processes, participatory artistic training and dialogue between the arts. It was created as a contribution to reflection on our contemporary socio-cultural environment, as well as to support processes for constructing the culture of today and tomorrow. Set in one of the most important industrial architecture sites of early 20 th century in Madrid, it aims to become the city’s biggest centre for contemporary creation and a leading international space dedicated to present-day creation. Matadero Madrid is an initiative by Madrid Council’s Department of the Arts, in collaboration with other public and private entities. El Ranchito is a research project promoted by Matadero Madrid aimed at developing new strategies for fostering art institution-based creation and reflection by providing residencies for international artists, establishing connections with multiple local cultural agents and launching open calls as tools for energising the art scene. There are two open calls: 1. Artist in residence . Madrid’s cultural stakeholders are the ones who provide El Ranchito with a list of foreign artists with whom they would like to work or develop a joint project. El Ranchito offers a residency in Madrid of three to six weeks with a per diem allowance throughout the stay. The project resulting from this work may receive funding from El Ranchito in a subsequent stage and form part of its schedule of activities. 2 Workspace for artists . Different work modules are available for the city’s artists and collectives that may need them to develop a new project over a period of 3 months maximum. The number of artists benefitting from this call will vary according to the square metres of space and time requested.

In 2020, the META foundation was founded as a non-profit organisation to provide programming to August House. As such, the residency programme falls under the ambit of the META foundation. Fifteen years ago, when everyone was leaving the city, artists started moving into August House and making it their own. With a fascinating history in both the art world and real estate, August House is a sought after artist community in the city, with its gritty, stimulating surrounds that keep artists and visitors alike engaged with the urban vibes of Johannesburg’s inner world. The artists in August House, work across mediums and disciplines and are a mixture of well-known and emerging artists. With space for more than 50 artists, August House accommodates one of the largest contemporary African fine art communities in South Africa. August House Partially-funded Residency 2022 META foundation is calling for artists, creatives, or collectives looking to take up studio space in one of the largest buildings in South Africa, August House Studios, also known as the artists’ playground. The Partially-funded Residency Program is a 3-month program wherein the participant would be located at End Street Studios located on the 2nd floor of August House. We have 3 studios that we offer on rotation for residencies within the End Street studio space. Of course, there is a booking schedule for these and as such, it depends on when the artist wants to come. • The residency period is 3 months long. The residency apartment will be available after 30 April 2022. Should applicants choose to come before this time, they may have to find alternative accommodations. • The residency provides for a studio space and furnished accommodation within August House. • The residency does NOT provide for transport, living, medical or material costs. • There is uncapped internet in the building. • A parking space will be provided. • The artist is expected to contribute to the cost of the program, albeit a substantially reduced amount from renting space in August House. • A deposit is required 2 months in advance of attending or unless negotiated with the META foundation Director. • During the residency, the artists are welcome to participate in any activities or events taking place at August House. The artist is provided with their own set of keys and is free to come and go as they see fit.

The MISTRA Environmental Communication (MEC) Research Programme is a four-year research project, based in Sweden and implemented by an international consortium, which includes the Institute of Communication Studies and Journalism at the Faculty of Social Sciences at Charles University. MEC's overarching aim is to reframe Swedish environmental communication, i.e., to mainstream an advanced and inclusive understanding of environmental communication in research, policy and practice such that it can effectively underpin and foster sustainability transformations. MEC draws on a transdisciplinary approach that involves researchers from a range of disciplinary backgrounds as well as non-academic partners representing crucial actors in wider society to harness existing thinking, co-develop new insights and approaches and translate these into communication practice. The MEC research programme addresses five major fields of environmental communication practice. These include (i) government-led dialogue, (ii) consumption, (iii) science and knowledge co-production, (iv) organisational networks in market contexts and (v) arts and the media and form the basis of MEC's work package structure. In addition, MEC is also a participatory research project, that aims to involve stakeholders in all its research stages; these stakeholders include the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency, Sweden's Forestry Agency, the Federation of Farmers, Greenpeace, environmental consultancies, artists, media representatives and museums, and many other authorities, NGOs and businesses. The MEC research programme is hosted by the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) and involves academics at SLU, Uppsala University, Lund University, Borås University, the University of the Sunshine Coast in Australia, the University of Texas at Austin and Charles University. Importantly, the consortium also includes 28 societal partners, covering a wide range of environmental and sustainability concerns and perspectives – from climate action to nature conservation, hunting and agriculture, and from the local to the national and international level. This website communicates the activities of the team at Charles University, based at the Institute of Communication Studies and Journalism (ICSJ). The Institute of Communication Studies and Journalism at Charles University is one of the partners of the MISTRA Environmental Communication (MISTRA-EC) Research Programme. At ICSJ, they do research on the communication of environmental and sustainability issues in Swedish arts and media. They are particularly interested in the discursive struggles between the different environmental and sustainability discourses that circulate in Swedish arts and media. In addition, we work on developing strategies to open up existing discursive patterns and constellations for a constructive engagement with new or marginalised perspectives. Moreover, they focus on how materiality intersects with these discourses on the environment, looking at how the material is entangled with the discursive, and how the material can play a primary role in dislocating particular discourses, but also in how the material invites particular discourses to be assembled with it. A third research strand focuses on the participatory dimensions of the MEC Research Programme itself, investigating how in this research programme, with its large number of societal partners, the power relations between academic and non-academic team members are organised, and can be further equalised through a series of participatory tools. Finally, the ICSJ team is researching and deploying the capacities of arts-based research to communicate academic research about the environment.
