The Soap Factory is a laboratory for artistic experimentation and innovation, dedicated to supporting artists and engaging audiences through the production and presentation of contemporary art. The Soap Factory Artists-in-Residence Program supports emerging and mid-career artists and curators working across all disciplines and is open to local, regional, national, and internationally-based artists. They offer one to twelve-month residencies, creating a shared space for artistic dialogue and international cultural exchange for an extended period of time. In addition to a private studio, stipends, and housing coordination, residents receive substantial career development support including opportunities to exhibit in the main and lower level galleries, photographic and video documentation, guest studio visits, artist-talks and public openings. Residency artists also benefit from the AIR community; including ongoing dialogue with fellow residency artists, informal gatherings, inter-studio visits and activities, as well as monthly field trips and meals together. The program and facilities are designed to create a community, foster the expansion and exchange of artistic and cultural practices, and provide artists with exposure to the Twin Cities and its arts ecosystem.

The mission of SOMArts is to promote and nurture art on the community level, and to foster an appreciation of and respect for all cultures. Founded in 1979, SOMArts embraces the entire spectrum of arts practice and cultural identity, and it is beloved in San Francisco as a truly multicultural, community-built space where cutting-edge events and counterculture commingle with traditional art forms. Financial support provided by The Commons Curatorial Residency enables artists and curators to continue their professional development, form new collaborative partnerships, and engage community residents through programming that serves the mission of SOMArts: to promote and nurture art on the community level and foster an appreciation of and respect for all cultures. Four residencies are awarded each season and are designed to support emerging and mid‐career artists, as well as artists exploring new and challenging ideas.

SomoS closely works with artists, organizers, and curators to realize their projects. Agility, urgency, flexibility, and high frequency are inherent features of SomoS' vision and practice. SomoS’ Artist-in-Residence Program offers cultivated, supportive, and stimulating surroundings to international visiting artists wishing to realize an artistic project in Berlin. The minimum 3 month residency is focused on production, experience, critical discourse, networking, and local participation. The SomoS residency program is designed for artists working in disciplines such as drawing, collage, photography, media-art, performance, and film/video. Staying at SomoS, participants will become a part of a thriving artistic community with an active exhibition and event program and will easily and swiftly become well-acquainted with the creative, networked city that is Berlin. During their time at SomoS, residents may undertake their own activities like workshops, talks etc., which can be hosted in the on-site exhibition space or workshop rooms. AIR participants have free access to all general workshops, artist-talks, screenings, exhibitions and other regular events taking place at SomoS art house. Residents will meet regularly with SomoS curators to discuss and review their progress towards completing their project.
